Gipton Square to get £45K facelift

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 18th Jun 2009

Gipton Square in East Leeds is one of the 16 sites to get either a refurbished or completely new play area under the Governments Playbuilder Initiative.

The current play area has seen better days but thanks to a £25,000 funding boost from Playbuilder and £20,000 from the East Inner Area Committee, planning for the project has already begun. The consultation process got underway last week with the people of Gipton working with Leeds City Council, putting forward their ideas for the new play area.

Cllr Alan Taylor (Lib Dem, Gipton and Harehills) said:

"I am extremely pleased that we have been granted this funding for our area and are going to be in the first wave of sites to be developed. The current play area on the square is in a sorry state at present. I'm sure people will be pleased that new play equipment will be installed by March 2010 at the latest.

" I look forward to seeing the results of the consultation on paper and looking at what equipment and design have been agreed".
