A little rain couldn't dampen volunteers' enthusiasm12.00.00am GMT Wed 19th Nov 2008
Liberal Democrat councillors, the Friends of East End Park and pupils from Richmond Hill Primary School braved the poor weather on Thursday to plant bulbs in their local park. Volunteers were there for the best part of the morning in ever heavier rain, learning how to "dig, plant and tread in" from Leeds City Council Parks department staff. Councillors David Hollingsworth, Ralph Pryke and Richard Brett supported the effort for the third year running by donating £500 of their Members' Improvement in the Community and Environment (MICE) money to purchase woodland bulbs for East End Park. Cllrs Hollingsworth and Brett also showed they're not afraid of a little hard work by rolling up their sleeves and getting stuck in themselves. Councillor David Hollingsworth (Lib Dem, Burmantofts and Richmond Hill) commented: "I am very pleased that we are able to contribute to this good cause for a third year running. The park always looks so beautiful in the spring when the bulbs come up The volunteers who helped out today can have a real sense of pride in what they have achieved for their community. My special thanks go to the Friends of East End Park and the staff and pupils of Richmond Hill Primary School for all their hard work."
