Local councillors praise Leeds Girls' High School Action Group

5.29.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Wed 2nd Jul 2008

Speaking in Council today, Councillor Martin Hamilton (Lib Dem, Headingley) commented on the imminent planning applications for the Leeds Girls' High School site in Headingley.

He said:

"I pay tribute to the work of the Leeds Girls' High School Action Group in keeping this issue on the agenda. We understand that planning applications are now imminent. Local Councillors will be looking at six key issues in coming to a view on the planning application:

1) Does it retain the Ford House green space as a community park?

2) Does it retain the sports centre for community and local school use?

3) Does it retain the sports pitch for community and local school use?

4) Does it provide affordable housing for families?

5) Does it rule out purpose- built student accommodation?

6) Does it rule out pub uses for the Elinor Lupton centre? "

Councillor James Monaghan (Lib Dem, Headingley) added :

"The Leeds Girls High School action group has produced an excellent community planning brief which sets out the community's hopes for the site. We very much hope that any planning application respects these principles - if it does we could see a development that everyone can be proud of"
