Welcome for safety measures at accident site

Local Liberal Democrat councillors have welcomed news that funding has been granted for a toucan crossing on a busy stretch of road in Moortown.

The crossing will be located at an existing crossing point on the ring road near King Lane that is currently used by parents and children walking to the nearby Allerton High and Alwoodley, Brodetsky and St Paul's primary schools. The speed limit will also be reduced from 70 to 40mph.

A report from Leeds City Council approves £162,000 to be spent on the work which will be carried out in the current financial year.

Local residents have campaigned for some time for a proper crossing at the site which recently saw a fatal traffic accident.

Cllr Brenda Lancaster (Liberal Democrat, Moortown) said:

"This is great news and it follows two years of campaigning with local residents to get a safe crossing built and the speed limit reduced on this stretch of road.

"This site saw a fatal accident not so long ago which just shows how sorely this crossing is needed.

Cllr Richard Harker (Liberal Democrat, Moortown) said:

"The safety of our young people when travelling to and from school is very important. My ward colleagues and I are absolutely delighted that this important work will soon be carried out."
