Rothwell councillor welcomes parking progress

12.00.00am GMT Fri 7th Mar 2008

Parking provision for local town centres will be addressed in a report to Leeds City Council's Executive Board next Wednesday.

The report contains the results of a survey into parking problems in 28 town and district centres in Leeds. Issues such as levels of retail, parking provision and offences, nearby schools and visitor attractions were all included.

This will form the basis of parking plans for individual town centres.

Rothwell councillor Don Wilson (Liberal Democrat) welcomed the local focus of the report and highlighted the work already done on parking in the town.

"I am very glad that an approach that takes into account an area's local circumstances will be the norm in Leeds.

"In Rothwell this approach has already seen us benefit from nearly half a million pounds to improve Marsh Street car park without introducing charges. We also made sure that car parking for the development at Morrisons was sorted out before the building work started.

"Quality free parking facilities in Rothwell encourage people into the town and are essential to ensure local businesses remain healthy."
