Local Councillors Welcome New Investment At Harehills Lane/Compton Road Junction6.00.00am GMT Wed 20th Feb 2008 Local Liberal Democrat Councillors in Burmantofts and Richmond Hill Ward, and Gipton and Harehills Ward have welcomed plans to improve pedestrian crossings and combat congestion at the junction at Harehills Lane and Compton Road. The Council has announced the investment of a further quarter of a million pounds to improve the junction. Councillor Alan Taylor (Liberal Democrat, Gipton and Harehills) said "Harehills Lane is one of the busiest and most vibrant shopping areas in Leeds, and we need to make sure that traffic can flow smoothly across this key crossroads. While the improvements we can make are limited by the layout of the roads, this will bring improvements for road users, include buses, as well as improve safety for pedestrians." Councillor Ralph Pryke (Liberal Democrat, Burmantofts and Richmond Hill added "The proposals to improve the pedestrian crossings by introducing 'islands' will make it easier for local people heading to and from the shops to cross over at the junction. It's always a problem to meet with the needs of both pedestrians and vehicles but hopefully this investment will make life a little easier for both".
