Leeds folk are being urged to take the simplest of measures to help protect their homes from burglars as the dark nights draw in.

West Yorkshire Police Authority board member Cllr Brenda Lancaster explained how flicking a switch could thwart would-be thieves.

Councillor Brenda Lancaster (Lib Dem, Moortown) said:

"When it starts to get dark burglars can easily identify unoccupied houses

as those without any lights on. Often people are not home from work until a couple of hours after it has got dark. The simple precaution of using lights and timer switches can make the difference between your home being targeted by burglars or being left alone.

"I would also encourage people to be a good neighbour and keep an eye out on other homes in your street. If you see anything suspicious, call the Police."
