CCTV boost for Otley and Yeadon9.19.00am GMT Wed 24th Oct 2007
Leeds City Council has agreed to fund eight CCTV cameras in Otley and Yeadon. Five cameras will be installed in strategic locations around the centre of Otley, whilst a further three cameras will be located along Yeadon High Street. Local councillors Graham Kirkland and Ryk Downes explain more about the scheme. Cllr Graham Kirkland (Lib Dem, Otley & Yeadon) said: "I am delighted that the city council has agreed to fund the cameras in both Otley and Yeadon. Funding for their running costs has already been secured through the north west outer area committee. "CCTV is a proven way of combating anti-social behaviour such as theft, graffiti and drink-related violence. The cameras will be located in key areas in both town centres to ensure that they are used to maximum effect." Councillor Ryk Downes (Lib Dem, Otley & Yeadon) added: "The installation of the CCTV cameras forms part of two wider projects planned for the centres of both Otley and Yeadon. "A £1m bid has been submitted to revamp the centre of Yeadon, whilst a similar £300k bid has been submitted for Otley as part of the council's Town and District regeneration scheme. When these bids get the Ok then local people can look forward to their town centres getting a major facelift."
