Council chiefs have approved a £2.5m project that will give 52 dilapidated homes in inner city Leeds a new lease of life.

The council-run scheme aims to extend the lifespan of a number of run-down terraces in the Burley Lodge area by 30 years.

Funded by the government's Single Regional Funding Pot and the owners themselves, the project was given the green-light by the council's executive board earlier today (17/10/07).

Local councillor Penny Ewens has backed the scheme and explained why the revamp of existing housing stock is good for the area.

Councillor Penny Ewens (Lib Dem, Hyde Park & Woodhouse) said:

"Homes on Carberry Place, Cardigan Road, Burley Lodge Road and Thornville Road have been earmarked for a revamp.

"The majority of these homes are 4 bedroomed properties that are perfect for families. In an area where there is a dearth of affordable family-friendly housing as it is, it is vital that we utilise our existing stock."
