Harehills set to get a £125k environmental makeover10.18.00am GMT Mon 8th Oct 2007
£30K from the council's Safer Cleaner Greener fund will be spent on improving decrepit bin yards in Harehills. A further £95k will pay for a major clean-up of Shepherd's Lane, known locally as Pigeon Square. Local councillor Alan Taylor has welcomed the investment. Councillor the Reverend Alan Taylor said (Lib Dem, Gipton & Harehills) "Many bin yards in Harehills are in a dire state and have become a magnet for fly tipping and drug use. Proposed measures such as new security gates and fencing will help stop dealers and fly tippers abusing the bin yards, making them safe for local residents. Councillor Alan Taylor added, "Pigeon Square is currently a dumping ground for all kinds of food waste and is a haven for vermin. Any plans to give the square a revamp are obviously very welcome. Further consultation will be held with those residents directly affected by these schemes, with work hopefully getting underway in and around the Christmas period.
