Councillor Alan Taylor (Lib Dem, Gipton & Harehills) has welcomed proposals that the council will invest a further £500k in the redevelopment of Harehills Middle School as a centre for the local community.

The centre will include both start-up business facilities and meeting rooms for the use of local people and will be run by development trust, the Harehills Community Investment Company.

Councillor Reverend Alan Taylor said, "Harehills Middle School has been left empty for too long and it has become a magnet for anti-social behaviour, including drug dealing and fly-tipping.

"Over the past three years the council has worked hard to find a realistic long term use for the building which is still very much a key local landmark. This £500k investment will go some way to restoring the school's former status as a hub for the local community. This is regeneration at its best."
