Headingley takeaway restriction proposal welcomed by local councillors2.14.00pm GMT Fri 17th Aug 2007 The council is proposing to limit the number of takeaways that can open after 11pm in Headingley as part of a three year review of its licensing policy. A draft policy is currently out to consultation with Leeds residents. Headingley councillors James Monaghan and Martin Hamilton explained why they've welcomed the proposed takeaway restrictions. Councillor James Monaghan (Lib Dem, Headingley) and Chair of the Headingley Forum said, "The issue of late night takeaways was raised at a Headingley Forum meeting and we decided to pursue the matter. The concentration of takeaways in Headingley is higher than any other area in the city and this gives rise to problems such as noise nuisance and increased littering. I am pleased that the council has responded positively to residents' concerns and is seeking approval to take direct action to combat the problems caused by late night takeaways." Councillor Martin Hamilton (Lib Dem, Headingley) added, "Residents often complain about the noise and mess caused by late night takeaways. This policy would give the council additional powers to curb their activity late at night. Any restriction would give further teeth to the cumulative impact policy already in place in Headingley, which limits the development of pubs in the area."
