Lib Dems win funding for alley gates in Moortown

2.59.33pm GMT Mon 6th Aug 2007

Local Lib Dem councillor Mark Harris has welcomed the decision to close-off a number of ginnels in the Carrholms and Wensley Green area of Moortown.

Earlier today the Inner North East Area Committee confirmed they would be funding the alley gate scheme.

The alley gates will be installed later this month.

Councillor Mark Harris (Lib Dem, Moortown) said "Along with my colleagues Cllr Brenda Lancaster and Cllr Richard Harker, I have been supporting plans to close-off some of the ginnels for the last two years. Now after many meetings and discussions with local people, as well as groups like the Leeds Local Access Forum and local footpath user groups, we have some action.

"The level of vandalism people living next to ginnels have experienced has been appalling; including an arson attack on house with a young child living in it.

"The alley gates will allow residents in the Carrholms and Wensley Green area to enjoy the full use of their properties without the worry of anti-social or criminal activity outside their back gardens. This really is excellent news."
