Water works cause crossing delay in Otley

12.00.00am GMT Wed 7th Mar 2007

Yorkshire Water's main replacement programme has delayed the construction of a new pelican crossing on Bradford Road, Otley.

Last year, following a long local campaign, a new crossing was agreed to help children going to school across the busy Bradford Road.

However, the timing of Yorkshire Water's works has meant that the pelican crossing has been shelved.

Councillor Colin Campbell said, "It was hoped that work on the crossing would start any time now but I have discovered there has been a delay. Yorkshire Water are planning major works in Otley town centre during the spring. Following a request to keep road disruption to a minimum it was decided to delay the work on the crossing till these were completed."

Councillor Campbell added, " I hope that as soon as these works are completed the council will be on site and this much needed safety measure will be put in place."
