A limit on student cars would ease Headingley traffic woes9.20.51pm GMT Sun 19th Nov 2006 Headingley Councillor James Monaghan has called for Leeds' universities to limit the number of cars their students can bring to the city. During term time Headingley and its arterial routes become virtually impassable due to the sheer volume of traffic and parked cars in the surrounding streets. Councillor Monaghan has opened the debate on whether it would be practical to limit the number of cars per household in order to ease the problem. Councillor James Monaghan (Lib Dem, Headingley) said "Congestion on the A660 is exacerbated to dreadful levels during term times and parking in Headingley becomes almost impossible." Councillor Monaghan added, "Not only do parked cars clog up the streets for local residents but they make them dangerous for pedestrians. Cars squeezed into every available space make the roads narrower and difficult for the emergency services and street cleaning team's to access. Put simply there isn't enough room and something needs to be done."
