Councillor's Visit to Highlight the Dangers of Fireworks

3.08.00pm GMT Fri 6th Oct 2006

Pupils at Lawnswood High School are being given lessons in firework safety on Tuesday 17th October. Officers from Trading Standards, the Fire Service and the Police are visiting the school 'to create a timely reminder of the appropriate usage of fireworks so that this time of year can be enjoyable for everyone concerned'. Lib Dem Cllr Sue Bentley is a firm believer in the need to promote the message of firework safety, and will be attending to offer her support.

Cllr Bentley (Liberal Democrat, Weetwood) said "While the law has been tightened up in recent years to limit noise levels and the period when people can buy them, there are still far too many instances of anti social behaviour associated with fireworks. Unfortunately young people are often responsible so Trading Standards, the Police and Fire Service are to be applauded for going out to schools to try and get the message across to youngsters that fireworks are extremely dangerous if misused."
